Bonus Post: The Talk – Part 1

Note from SweetPoyzin: It’s my birthday and I’m gifting you this chapter of Eternally Yours.  Enjoy!

From Lucian’s POV.

Dani was exceptionally busy with Medical School these days and I guess she wanted me out of her hair.  Well, that and she wanted me to keep tabs on her Dad’s mental status.  So she planned this fishing trip for us at the ass-crack of dawn.

I was feeling extra sparkly that day.  Mostly because Dani had been trying to make me some vampire sunscreen.  She’s not all that great with her alchemy yet.  She did manage to create a potent sunscreen but it also had some side effects — it made the wearer very sparkly.

Finn was doing really well the morning of our excursion.  After reading his journals, I wasn’t sure which Finn would show up, but he was surprisingly together.

We fished for several hours and decided it was time for lunch.  Finn offered to gut and grill our catch, but I declined.  Yes, I drink other people’s blood but I am grossed out by fish guts.  I do realize the irony, thank you.

“So, Lucian.  I’m feeling pretty lucid today.”

‘You seem great, sir!”

“Please, Lucian, call me Finn.  Treat me like your girlfriend’s father and not a patient.”

“I am treating you like my girlfriend’s father.  That’s why I’m calling you sir.”

“Call me Finn, please.”

“Can I call you Mr. McNamara?”

“No.”

“Now that we have that settled, I’d like to get some other business in order.  Like you said, today is a good day for me so I think it is important to have some important chats with you, Lucian.”

“All right, sir – er, Finn.”

“I’m going to leave Penny.”

I immediately started choking on my food.  Here I am, on a lovely fishing trip set up by my girlfriend, and her Dad drops a bombshell.

“Don’t pretend it’s that shocking, Lucian.  I’ve got it all set up already.  I had a lawyer draw up the papers, she’ll get everything and I’ll will quietly go away and she won’t have to see me become a shriveled mess.”

“Have you told her, Finn?  This isn’t something that you should decide on your own.  She needs to be part of this choice.”

Finn got up and walked towards the fishing shack.  “I don’t see it as a choice, son.”

We sat in silence for awhile.  I was trying to be as casual as possible.  Not that being causal is possible when your girlfriend’s dad divulges he’s leaving his family and not really telling them.

“The other thing we need to discuss, Lucian, is what your intentions towards Danielle are.  Do you want to marry her?  I need to know before I leave that she will be taken care of.”

“You know I was married before, Finn?  Many, many, many years ago.  She was mortal.  I’m not sure I want to do that again but I cannot ask Dani to change.”  I sighed.

“Why the hell not?”

“She’s got this whole legacy to carry on!”

“Look, Lucian.  I’ve been a member of this family for a long time.  If there is one thing I know is that these women make their own choices.  If Dani wants to change, legacy be damned, she’ll do it.”

I got up and pulled the ring box from my pocket.

“Do you always carry engagement rings in your pocket, son?”

“No, sir.  But I did come here wanting to ask you if I could marry your daughter.”

“Son, it would be an honor to make that name official.”

As we were packing up to return home, Finn started crying.

“I can’t believe I’m going to miss everything.  The wedding, the grandkids, the graduations.”  He sobbed.  “I’m going to lose it all because I’m going to lose me.”

“HEY!”  I yelled, louder than I meant.  “Get it together.  Now I am your doctor.  I am going to do everything in my power to make sure you don’t miss anything.  We can’t prevent it, but we can push it off.  You have to trust me.  If you trust me to marry your daughter you have to trust me to help you.”

“Don’t you ever talk to me like that again, Lucian.”

“Don’t make me, sir.”

He sobbed, resigned.  “Don’t let me miss that wedding.”

I crossed my fingers behind my back.  “I won’t, sir.  You’ll be fine.”
